HAUTE ROUTE 2016: SAVING LIVES WITH TT1

For many riders, taking part in the Haute Route is a life-changing experience. And in a number of cases the challenge of completing the world’s highest cyclosportive will achieve even more: enabling the event’s official charity to save lives of those affected by diabetes in some of poorest places in the world. Find out how you could make Team Type 1’s mission your own…

In 2014, the Team Type 1 Foundation was selected to be the Official Charity of the Haute Route. Over the past two years this exciting partnership has raised over $214,000 to help kids in the developing world who are affected by diabetes obtain life-saving access to insulin, glucose monitors and test strips. The funds raised by the 30 riders who chose to be Team Type 1 riders at the Haute Route made it possible for the Foundation to purchase over 1 million blood glucose test strips. Since it cost $250 to purchase a year’s supply of these life-saving test strips for one person in Rwanda, the Haute Route riders have saved the lives of over 857 Rwandan kids who have type 1 diabetes. One of Team Type 1 Foundation’s goal is to ensure everyone with type 1 diabetes has equal access to the medicine and tools to stay alive. Clearly the Haute Route are making a significant contribution to achieving this goal.

To ride the Haute Route is a major accomplishment for anyone. For the cyclists who become Team Type 1 Haute Route team members, choosing to ride the Haute Route with a greater purpose, to help save lives and stop death from diabetes, is an even greater accomplishment. In 2015 we had 24 Team Type 1 Haute Route riders with a goal to raise $100,000. We are pleased to report that the team crushed their goal and raised over $146,000 by the time they crossed the finish line in Venice. We would like to congratulate these riders for their accomplishments and to thank each and every one of them for their efforts and generosity. We also would like to give special recognition to the three athletes below who reached the Team Type 1 Haute Route fundraising podium:

Paul Dickson, USA $30,337

Amanda Mikalachki, Canada $25,645

Alain Lambert, Canada $15,890

Combined these three Team Type 1 Haute Route athletes raised over $71,000. Just amazing!

For 2016 the Haute Route and the Team Type 1 Foundation have set goal to raise $175,000 and to recruit at least 40 riders. If your are interested in becoming a Team Type 1 Haute Route rider please contact Richard Brown at [email protected]. The Team Type 1 Foundation has some great packages, including the possibility of having your Haute Route registration and accommodations reimbursed depending on the level of funds raised for the Foundation. We also have additional special benefits for our top fundraisers.
