As the last Haute Route event on the programme for 2020, Haute Route Mexico is the ideal opportunity to end your cycling season in the picturesque mountains around Valle de Bravo and witness the splendor of Central Mexico.
Stage 1: Valle de Bravo - Valle de Bravo
Original - 109KM / 1747M+
Starting from the town‘s main marina, a combination of rolling hills and flats will take you around Valle de Bravo’s lake and out of the town in a secure convoy with the peloton at a controlled speed. Once you’ve passed the dam at the end of the lake, you’ll head into a series of small roads with little or no traffic and you’ll soon find your first hydration stop marking the start of the initial timed section of the day. Make sure to fill up those bottles as a long climb lies ahead with sections as steep as 10% or even 12%. This is a spectacular and demanding climb, but be wise on your power output since there’s still more than half of the day’s distance ahead. After another 7 km of mild climbing, you’ll reach the Donato Guerra arch which will guide you through a highway and onto a delightful backroad surrounded by beautiful forests and a small lake. At this point, one last climb lies between you and the end of the timed section. You’ll be rewarded with an amazing winding descent in the forest to Amanalco‘s town and be greeted by the spectacular 16th century “Ex Hacienda Pipioltepec”. This marks the start of the curvy, fast and fun descent back to Valle de Bravo.
Compact - 60KM / 1073M+
The Compact course features the same first ascent up to Arco Donato Guerra (Highest point of the day) then all riders can enjoy a 15 km descent back to the event village, lunch and massage in Valle de Bravo.
Stage 2: Valle de Bravo - Valle de Bravo
Original - 145KM / 2735M+
You will be starting off from the main marina towards the outskirts of Valle de Bravo, until you reach the start of the main timed section of the day. From there, you’ll make your way up a 10 km hill until reaching the “Las Mariposas Sanctuary”, a magic place where the endangered “Mariposa Monarca” migrates all the way from Canada to spend its winters. From here, you’ll enjoy a small descent that ends in San Francisco Oxtotilpan, before embarking on the most iconic and demanding climb of Haute Route Mexico 2020. Featuring spectacular views, small towns and fields of undulating crops all the way up, until you reach the outskirts of the “Nevado de Toluca Volcano National Park”. Here, you’ll reach the highest point of all the Haute Route events in 2020 at exactly 3,444 metres above sea level. Take the time to enjoy the impressive panoramic views from the dormant volcano. From there, a long and sinuous descent awaits, taking you into a small typical Mexican town “Real de Arriba” with cobbled roads and gorgeous views. As you leave the town, you will be preparing to start your last timed section of the day, a short but demanding uphill section that will require every bit of energy you have left.
Compact - 97KM / 1807 M+
The Compact course in this second stage of Haute Route Mexico follows the same route as the Original course with the first ascent up to “Las Mariposas Sanctuary”, then you’ll enjoy the first descent of the day, at the bottom you’ll find the end of the first timed section. Subsequently you’ll be riding through some typical Mexican villages and past fields of crops, taking you into a small typical Mexican town “Real de Arriba” with cobbled roads and gorgeous views.
